Police Chief Troy Riggs has announced the kick off of a zero tolerance policy towards drivers without auto insurance. Beginning on New Years Eve, officers will establish checkpoints across the city to catch uninsured drivers. Any motorist found without proof of financial responsibility will have their vehicle towed to the impound yard.At the start of the new year if a driver is involved in an accident and does not have proof of insurance their vehicle will be towed. According to a news release, 4,015 motorists within the the past six months have been cited for not having auto insurance. Violators face a $304 fine, plus court costs. A second offense is punishable by a $699 fine, plus court costs. If you are caught a third time, you will be fined $1,069.
The owners of the cars impounded will also have to pay $133.30 for impound costs, plus $21.65 for every day the vehicle is impounded. The owner of the vehicle is required to bring current proof of financial responsibility before the vehicle is released.
