Auto Insurance Claims

Question
A city bus signaled before a busstop and pulled aside as normal. The driver in the vehicle following the bus stopped abruptly as the bus pulled aside (apparently uncertain about passing a bus with flashing lights, like a schoolbus). The car following her slammed on the brakes as did I, and we all collided together. Car #1 hit by car#2, and #2 hit by me, #3. We pulled over and exchanged info however car #1 didn't have an insurance card but said she was with coverage.

I was the only one with noteable damage in this situation. Both myself and friend have liability only with uninsured. Do I contact my insurance company or my friend's insurance company? Is the unpredictable actions of driver #1 taken into account by the insurance agencies here? Do I need to file a police report?

2011 car insurance trends can save you money, time

Next year could be a good time for car insurance customers who want policy discounts and are willing to ask for them.

At the same time, more drivers may scale back their coverage in 2011 by pinching pennies, a decision that could have major consequences.

Insurance experts say those developments are likely to be part of the five biggest car insurance trends for the coming year.
Trend #1: Competitive rates

Auto insurance markets in many areas of the country are soft because of the economy, says Ryan Hanley, an insurance broker with the Guilderland Agency in Albany, N.Y.

As a result, companies are competing for fewer customers, which has kept premiums low or stable, he says.

"Insurance companies will be spending more money next year to reach their desired customers," Hanley says.

The trend for 2011 is for premiums to continue to remain competitive, Hanley says. You can take advantage of insurers' moderate rates this year by shopping around for the best car insurance deal.

In general, get at least three different auto insurance quotes before making a decision on a company, says Alex Hageli, director of personal lines policy for the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI), a Des Plaines, Ill., trade group.

NY1 For You: Car Insurance Claims Went Unanswered For Months, Queens Residents Say

Some frustrated Queens residents reached out to NY1 after waiting over seven months for an insurance company to resolve a multi-car accident that happened in their neighborhood. NY1's Jon Weinstein filed the following "NY1 For You" report.

Last July, a neighborhood in Flushing, Queens was rattled when a drunk driver careened down the street hitting seven cars and two homes.

"I thought I was watching a movie. Everybody’s cars damaged or totaled," said resident Soonyoung Kwon.

"It was a really really a very eerie day after it’s all said and done. Think about it and say how somebody didn’t get hurt or killed is amazing," said resident Michael Tartaro.

Although the incident occurred nearly six months ago, the memory is difficult to erase, especially for those neighbors whose cars are still sitting damaged and unused in their driveway.

"I have never had insurance where they don’t call you back. I can understand one person is irresponsible. I didn’t realize the whole insurance company was like this," said resident Sue Chow Chang.

"All we want is we want the status. That’s all we want. We’re not even asking you, give me the money because we know it’s not going to be a lot," said Kwon.

Those affected by the crash reached out to "NY1 For You" because they claim the driver’s insurance company, Country-Wide Insurance, has been completely unresponsive.

Car Insurance Premiums Shock

In the last year, car insurance premiums have risen by approximately 40%!

Even when drivers accrue another year’s worth of no claims bonus, many are finding that their premiums are still increasing.

One of the main factors driving this huge increase has been the rise in numbers of fraudulent accident claims. Recent vibes from the insurance sector are indicating that more increases in insurance premiums are a certainty.

The AA had conducted some research into insurance premium costs, and found that this increase of 40% on average for a one year comprehensive car insurance policy was the biggest ever increase since they began keeping records.

The young driver category is the one which has seen the biggest yearly increase in their premiums. For those between the ages of 17 and 22, the average yearly comprehensive insurance cost increased by just over 50%, with male drivers of this age paying nearly double that of their female counterparts.
