Quick Question: Should Wisconsin roll back auto insurance liability minimums to 2009 levels?

Here’s how five people answered this week’s question posed by Capital Times freelancer Kevin Murphy. What do you think? Please join the discussion.

“No. I thought it was wise to actually increase the levels last year to make sure that if you got injured or something you’d be covered. I was familiar with the story in the paper about the couple who were hurt and their problems with adequate coverage. I’m in favor of keeping the minimums right where they’re at.”

“Yes, they’re way higher than what 46 or so other states require. Our earlier minimums were adequate and shouldn’t have been changed. We’re out of line with what the other states do and I’m for reducing them back to where they were.”

“I don’t think so. You can get in an accident and be in a bad situation with the minimums they’d allow. In the short run you may save some money on insurance if you’re not required to carry as much coverage, but if you’d ever need it, it wouldn’t cover you enough to pay the bills, especially the medical ones. We increased them and I didn’t notice that much difference in the cost of my premium. We shouldn’t lower them now.”

“No. With the costs associated with accidents people have today, we need (the minimums) up. The cost to repair your car, the personal liability, the medical coverage you need have all gone up, and I see no reason to roll them back now.”

“I think there was sound rationale in implementing the higher minimums in the first place. I’ve also discovered if you wait long enough they’ll change it again. So even if they roll them back now they’ll increase them again when the parties change in the Legislature. Sooner or later everything changes one way or another.”
