Umbrella Insurance Companies

Umbrella Insurance Companies

Most umbrella insurance companies are simply traditional insurance companies that also offer umbrella liability coverage. While insurance companies will try to sell home and auto insurance to just about everyone, they usually don't mention umbrella insurance unless that client has a high risk of being sued or specifically asks about it.

Umbrella insurance companies may be independent of your traditional insurance company, or you may want to have all your insurance under the same roof.

There is a big push among the more established companies to purchase all of your insurance coverage from the same provider. For example, one insurance company manages your home, auto, and umbrella liability coverage. Should there ever be a need to deal with more than one policy at a time, you would make one phone call and handle it all at once.

While this certainly is helpful with logistics, it may not be the best option for your individual needs. You may be able to get better rates if you seek umbrella insurance companies separately from your traditional insurance carrier. However, if you ever need to resolve a claim with more than one insurance company (your homeowners' insurance and the umbrella insurance company, for example) it can become quite complicated, and the hassle may not be worth that lower rate.

Many insurance companies, including those offering umbrella insurance, took a hit during the economic downturn. However most of them have recovered and insurance companies and insurance jobs remain very profitable enterprises providing an important service.
