How to Save on Coverage
Once you have determined your insurance needs, it’s time to do a thorough auto insurance comparison. There are, however, three things to know and have in front of you before you begin to compare auto insurance rates.
Step 1: Gather Your Information
First, you need to review your driving record. How many tickets did you get over the last three years? More importantly, what is on your driving record? Believe it or not, a state DMV can get it wrong sometimes, particularly if your name is similar to someone else’s. If you do have violations on your record, take note of how long they’ve been there. If these tickets are going to drop off your record in the next few months, you should wait before going for that car insurance quote.Next, you’ll want to know exactly how much you’re currently paying. If you are like many people who simply have it taken out of your bank account every month, you may not actually know. The easiest way, in this case, is to look at your bank statements. Otherwise, grab a bill so you know your current payment and how much your insurer’s competitors will have to offer you.
Step 2: Get Competitive Quotes
These days, it’s very easy to get online car insurance quotes. Almost every insurance company maintains a website, and there are even websites where you can get car insurance instant online quotes from several different companies. In fact, the Ohio State Department of Insurance maintains such a web site, and other states will soon be following suit; be sure and check the corresponding website for you own state.
Even today, however, there are a few insurers that (amazingly) do not have an Internet presence; therefore, you will still want to make a few phone calls (if you get a call center in Mumbhai, however, don’t bother – this is not the kind of company you would want to do business with, because it puts maximizing profits over providing decent services).
Step 3: Make a Record
Once you have several quotes, write all this information down – and make certain you organize it in whatever way works for you (otherwise, you’ll wind up going over old ground).
In addition to quotes, there are other things to know before you buy insurance online, however. For example, is there an 800 or 888 number you can call for questions that may not be answered on the company website (there’s usually an email address, but if you need a quick answer, the phone is usually best). You’ll also want to know about any available discounts – such as having kept a squeaky-clean driving record, having certain types of safety equipment, etc.
Finally, check out the company’s ratings – through the Better Business Bureau, AM Best, Standard & Poor’s and particularly your state’s Department of Insurance.
