County schools to stop paying dental insurance premiums

Auto Insurance Quotes ~ County schools to stop paying dental insurance premiums : The Davidson County Board of Education will not be paying for employees’ dental insurance premiums starting next year, with the board looking to save money in anticipation of a tough budget.

In a couple of months, when county school officials face the Davidson County Board of Commissioners, they plan to request $22.3 million in local funding, a little more than they asked of the board for the 2010-11 school year.

The local budget — the amount not covered by state or federal funds — would be approximately $25.3 million. The school board’s local budget last year was $24.2 million including $21.2 million from the county. Under its proposal, the school system would chip in $2.5 million from its fund balance and $439,264 from fines and forfeitures to the requested $21.3 million that officials hope to receive from the county.

The proposed local budget amount is a 5 percent increase from last year. Several reasons led to the budget increase including an estimated 10.56 percent increase in costs related to the payment of retirement benefits and a 7.10 percent increase in matching hospitalization benefits. Pam Sink, chief finance officer for the system, said another reason for the increase is the possibility of a shift worker’s compensation claims payments. The county schools may have to absorb close to $1.3 million that the state was paying for and will make school systems responsible.
